One of the beauties of being an entrepreneur is the opportunity to meet with other like minded individuals who understand business ownership, add motherhood into the mix and we’re really getting into it! There is something to be said when you have a seat at a table with boss ladies who are navigating through life and supporting each other in the process. I had the pleasure of meeting Linda,a former cosmetics executive, at a time in my life when I became more conscious of what I was consuming, both in and out of my body. How do I find something that is still laden with countless minerals, vitamins and extracts to battle fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone and improve elasticity without compromising?
At first the thought of transitioning my routine to a one-step, one product regime seamed too good to be true. At the time however, I had to work with the limitations of hormone disrupting, chemical free requirements which really forced my hand to switch over to something new. Enter Linda with her travel sachet of the all-in-one moisturizer at a collaborative event we held together at the Four Seasons in Yorkville. I was definitely skeptical I mean no eye cream? Common! I’m still not sure i’m totally convinced re the eye cream – I know it must be psychological, just like the look we get when people don’t understand how our bras work without a clasp!
Fast forward to today that sachet goes everywhere with me! It’s so easy to travel with, morning routines are a breeze, I don’t worry about what’s in it, where it’s made, how it’s made – my kinda business! Not to mention Linda is an incredible woman who eliminated the need to segregate by skin type, zone, time of day and, believe it or not, even gender! For these reasons we are excited to highlight Linda as a Mayana Muse and introduce you to her amazing beauty brand Mèreadesso. Because women supporting women is our jam. Check out our interview with the minimalist beauty below:
The one questions we get asked most often is – what does your name mean? So we have to ask… What does it mean?
When I became a mom, I finally understood what having no time was about – and so I wanted to create effective products without needing the time/money/effort for a bunch of steps. Mère = “mother” in French ; adesso = “now” in Italian. However as we grew, we noticed that our fastest growing demographic were men – so I wasn’t about to do a separate men’s line (pereadesso seemed rather weird) – so we stopped making this definition as prominent on our website as we had in the past.
Can you tell us how did the brand come to be and your desire to satisfy many skin tones and ethnic backgrounds from the get-go, a rarity in the beauty industry…
I felt that there was (and still is) a miss in the skincare landscape for broad spectrum products as opposed to singular targeted products. I believe that there are customers out there that are busy and time pressed such as moms who want multi-functionality in order to save time, money and effort. But that is not how the industry is currently structured.
With this positioning in mind, I sought out the best way to meet the needs of the broadest audience possible. Having the formula being Aloe based (first ingredient on the deck – as opposed to water) already set the product apart. Having every single ingredient that I have found beneficial to the skin over 25 years of creating new products – I strived to include everything that could help all skin types. Skin tones and ethnicity I have found are differentiated based on how the skin heals. As an example – take a pimple. As caucasion person will experience redness, and potential scarring but the tone of the skin will not change after it has healed. People with darker skin tones will show this injury sometimes with hyperpigmentation – or dark spots where the pimple was. So to be able to fix that as well as provide coverage was really a goal – and sets us apart from any of the other BB/CC (a light foundation / colour corrector) creams on the market.
What advice do you have with respect to the importance of understanding ingredients or lack thereof when purchasing a skincare product.
I think consumers are finally becoming more aware of the products that they put in their body and on their body. But knowing what to look for is always difficult. I tell customers that when reading ingredient listings they should be read like food labels – from the highest concentration to lowest. So you want to see the ingredients that you want higher on the list and other ingredients like stabilizers, fragrance and preservatives at the bottom of the listing. If a company is claiming their product contains some special ingredient and it’s at the bottom of the list – it is a marketing ploy.
How does motherhood enhance or impact your entrepreneurship
Well the initial concept arose out of me having my son and not having a moment to myself I was lucky if I managed a shower – and especially when travelling with him packing all of his needs: diapers/soothers/blankets/multiple changes of clothes, special plates and cutlery, folding sleeping crib and on and on – it was like travelling with Madonna on tour. So for me to pack a whole series of toiletries for my own skincare – the thought of that was exhausting.
What advice do you have for busy women with their skin care regime.
Buy Mèreadesso (ha ha). But seriously, keep it simple. Cleanse, exfoliate (even if it is just with a washcloth) and moisturize. Put on sunblock if needed. And then treat yourself to a proper facial during seasonal changes (4 times per year). Have some quiet time, drink the melon water, allow yourself to be pampered without interruption even if it is just for a couple of hours.
Whats your mantra/affirmation if any that get’s you through those tough days?
Try to always see the big picture and be always grateful for the blessings that you do have in your life. The rest can always be fixed. Breathe. And then a kick boxing class….
